Yard Preparation
Getting your backyard ready for your new oasis.
Creating the Perfect Foundation
A properly prepared site is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of your hot tub. A hot tub filled with water and people is incredibly heavy, and an uneven or inadequate foundation can cause damage to the spa shell and void your warranty.
Concrete Pad (Recommended)
A reinforced concrete pad, at least 4 inches thick, is the best foundation for a hot tub. It provides a solid, level, and permanent base that will support the weight evenly. Ensure the pad is slightly sloped for drainage but essentially flat where the tub will sit.
Reinforced Decking
If you plan to place your hot tub on a deck, it must be structurally reinforced to handle the weight (often exceeding 100 lbs per square foot when filled). Consult a licensed contractor or structural engineer to ensure your deck is safe.
Spa Pads
Prefabricated spa pads made of heavy-duty plastic can be used on a level surface of crushed gravel or sand. These are a good alternative if pouring concrete isn't an option, but the ground underneath must be perfectly level and compacted.
What to Avoid
Never place your hot tub directly on grass, bare earth, sand, or unsupported pavers. These surfaces will shift over time, causing the hot tub to settle unevenly, which can lead to structural damage.
Clearance and Access
When planning your site, remember to leave enough clearance around the hot tub for maintenance. You'll need access to the equipment panel (usually located beneath the main topside control). Also, consider the space needed for a cover lifter to operate smoothly.
